project-migration

OVERVIEW

This project will establish the first comprehensive longitudinal database on a sample of Vietnamese international migrant households with two waves of surveys in 2008 and 2013.

The data is expected to pave the way to setting a research agenda to shed light on diverse topics related to the socio-economic effects of international migration in Vietnam, such as the determinants of and selection into migration, the impact of remittances on sending communities, and topics related to return migration, among others. The survey covered six Vietnamese provinces, namely Hanoi, Hung Yen, Nghe An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho, and collected a wide range of data on a stratified sample of three groups of households: non migrants, absent migrants, and return migrants. The data on absent migrants was elicited through proxy household members. The sample size of 1,500 households in total was drawn from 90 communes/wards and equally split up between the six provinces.
