project-shocks

OVERVIEW

This project analyzes the role of shocks and risks for the development of poor countries and emerging market economies.

Central to the analysis of these factors is the concept of vulnerability. Target countries of this research are Thailand and Vietnam, who have both experienced high rates of economic growth and success in poverty reduction, but have also suffered from various types of shocks and have implemented crisis response strategies.

Both countries, although to different degrees, showed growing regional inequality with a persistence of “pockets of poverty”. In 2013, the project carried out its fourth household panel survey wave in three provinces in Vietnam, namely Thue Thien Hue, Dak Lak, and Ha Tinh. The survey aimed to assess the living conditions of the rural population and to measure households’ coping capacity to shocks.
