MDRI has been entrusted to prepare the Vietnam Millennium Development Goal reports in 2013 and 2015.
The report documents Viet Nam’s remarkable success in lifting 43 million people, or 45 percent of the total population, out of poverty. Universal primary education and gender equality in education have been achieved, with primary school enrollment reaching 99 percent and equalized school attendance ratios of male and female children. The maternal mortality rate has also fallen by three quarters.
The report also points out the areas that demand continuing efforts, comprising HIV/AIDS control, stunting, and environmental sustainability. The unequal progress at the sub-national level and among population groups, especially ethnic minorities, also requires attention.
The report highlights some lessons learned and good practices throughout Viet Nam’s fifteen-year journey, which can be specified in two groups: strong political will for effective MDG implementation, and a growth model combining pro-poor, social economic development with environmental protection.
In his speech at the UN Summit to Adopt the Post-2015 Development Agenda in New York, President Truong Tan Sang emphasized Viet Nam’s significant development progress and stressed the nation’s commitment to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
