Private Sector Development and Chronic Poverty Workshop

Hanoi. August 14, 2014. MDRI hosted a workshop presenting preliminary findings of the project “Policy guide on private sector development and chronic poverty”, carried out by MDRI in conjunction with the Overseas Development Institute (ODI).

The project aims at investigating the association between poverty dynamics and involvement in the private sector, particularly the non-farm sector. During the workshop, MDRI researchers delivered two presentations on the quantitative and qualitative study using data from the Vietnam Household Living Standard Surveys (VHLSS) 2010 & 2012 and from the 20 case studies conducted in Hanoi & Hoa Binh province, respectively. Besides, ODI’s representative, Ms. Chiara Mariotti, also briefed the audience on the flagship publication of the Chronic Poverty Advisory Network (CPAN). Mr Xavier Oudin, IRD’s representative presented his paper on household businesses and the informal sector in Vietnam.

The workshop not only disseminated important groundwork findings of the project but also facilitated thoughts and ideas on the subject of sustainable private sector engagement and chronic poverty escape. Through open discussion sessions, the participants including academics, policy-makers and practitioners were able to take away relevant implications for their research works as well as aiding projects in the field of chronic poverty reduction and private sector development.
