From 28 September to 1 October 2026, the ASEAN–EU Experts Dialogue, themed “Between Alignment and Autonomy: Rethinking ASEAN–EU Trade Relations in an Age of Geopolitical Fragmentation,” was held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Organised by The Habibie Center and the Hanns Seidel Foundation in ASEAN, the dialogue brought together around 30 mid- to senior-level representatives from leading think tanks across ASEAN and selected EU countries to discuss the evolving economic relationship between the two regions.
Against a backdrop of shifting global supply chains, intensifying geopolitical rivalry, and the growing weaponisation of economic interdependence, the dialogue examined how ASEAN and the EU can strengthen economic cooperation while preserving strategic autonomy and policy space.
Discussions focused on three key themes: geopolitical and geoeconomic developments in ASEAN–EU relations; supply-chain resilience and economic security; and standards, technology, and the green transition. A breakout session also provided an opportunity for participants to develop practical proposals for strengthening ASEAN–EU cooperation.
The dialogue highlighted the shared interests of ASEAN and the EU in diversifying economic partnerships, strengthening resilience, promoting trade and investment, and upholding an open, rules-based international order amid increasing geopolitical fragmentation.
Held under the Chatham House Rule, the closed-door dialogue provided a platform for experts and policy research institutions to exchange perspectives and explore pathways for a more resilient and mutually beneficial ASEAN–EU economic partnership.
