RISE Development World Management Survey (D-WMS) 2022

Overview

The Research on Improving Education System (RISE) in Vietnam project is a multi-disciplinary and institutional research program conducted over the 2016-2022 period. The program seeks to understand how extraordinary academic outcomes have
been achieved at primary and secondary school levels, what lessons can be drawn from other developing countries, and what Vietnam can learn from its successes to continue improving its educational system. In collaboration with the RISE Vietnam research team at the University of Minnesota (and affiliated researchers) and the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences (VNIES), MDRI collects quantitative and qualitative data (bi-)annually across Vietnam.
Being a part of the RISE Vietnam project, D-WMS was first implemented in 2021. (Deputy) Principals of 143 primary schools across 23 provinces were interviewed over the phone. Drawing upon its success, 2022 D-WMS conducts telephone interviews with the (Deputy) Principles of 99 lower secondary schools. Its aims are as follows:

  • To understand how the operations and management at primary and secondary schools have been built into a system at all levels.
  • To explore the possible connections between the management system and students’ academic outcomes.

Main task:

  • Finalize the research tool in Vietnamese.
  • Take the training course on utilizing the WMS tool.
  • Make the staffing and research management plan, including identification of human resources, recruitment, training organization, and guidelines and protocols for phone interviews.
  • Logistics arrangement for data collection, particularly gaining access to survey participants through gatekeepers.
  • Setting up the monitoring and supervision system.
  • Do quality control by double-scoring and reviewing submitted interview forms.
