GEMMES Viet Nam phase 2 is a research program whose main objective is to propose the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MoNRE) of Viet Nam with scientific evidence for the national dialogue on net-zero strategies and adaptation to climate change. Running from 2023 to 2026, it is divided into three research Components: (1) Climate; (2) Energy; (3) Social. Component 3 (Social Aspects) analyses the social dimensions of an energy transition in Viet Nam, through the prism of household and enterprise resilience. This Component will provide a series of scientific evidence about four social dimensions around climate change and the energy transition: on small and medium enterprises, around jobs creation and training about renewables, on the relationship with ecosystems and the environment, as well as around the combined social impacts of extreme weather and pollution events.
In this project, MDRI will lead two work packages:
+ Work Package 1: The Role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Reducing Emissions and Supporting the Energy Transition in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Manufacturing Value Chain. (label: WP1- ICT-SME). The project will develop knowledge on manufacturing ICT SMEs around the following aspects: i) energy consumption profile of firms, ii) willingness to engage or to pay for renewable energy, iii) perception of firms towards production externalities (pollution), and iv) linkages between energy profile and production practices and management of labour force.
+ Work Package 4: Climate change, air pollution, health, and labour productivity in Vietnam. (label: WP4- Pollution-Heat). This WP is one of the first attempts in Vietnam that compares the latest waves of climate change data (temperature/precipitation) and air pollution as well as their potential interactive effects on health and labour productivity in Vietnam.
